Revolutionizing Math Education: Telangana Teacher Redefines Learning with Cut-Outs
Pulavarthi Sumathi, a dedicated mathematics teacher at Zilla Parishad High School in the village of Godhur, Telangana, has revolutionized math education by using paper cut-outs to enhance students' understanding of geometry concepts and calculations. Recognizing the struggles faced by students, particularly those who were weak in mathematics, Sumathi decided to adopt a new teaching methodology. Instead of relying solely on traditional chalk and board methods, she began using three-dimensional paper cut-outs to illustrate mathematical concepts in a more tangible and engaging manner. Crafting over 100 objects, Sumathi's innovative approach has helped students in classes 6 to 8 grasp complex mathematical ideas with ease. Students have responded positively to the new methodology, overcoming their fear of the subject and experiencing a renewed interest in learning. The paper cut-outs serve various purposes, including visualizing cubic and quadratic polynomials, understanding the laws of exponents through folding toys, and even measuring the height of buildings. Sumathi's efforts have been recognized through the "Intinta Innovator program," and she has received appreciation from the government for her out-of-the-box thinking. Not limiting her creativity to the classroom, Sumathi also designed a paddy protection umbrella for farmers, which can be used during sudden rains at procurement centers. With a low cost of production, the umbrella has proven to be a practical solution for farmers in the region. Sumathi's innovative teaching methods and her commitment to transforming math education have garnered praise and admiration from both students and the educational community. Her story serves as an inspiration to educators and emphasizes the importance of finding creative ways to make learning a joyful experience for students.
