From Mason to Mentor: Empowering Youth through Traditional Martial Arts and Sports
V Praveen Kumar, a 28-year-old mason, is transforming the lives of underprivileged students through his dedication to teaching Silambam, a traditional Tamil martial art, and Kabaddi. With a strong belief in the power of sports to foster concentration, health, discipline, and a positive lifestyle, Praveen has established the EV Silambam Academy in June 2021. Having experienced the lack of conducive learning environments for Silambam during his youth, Praveen was determined to pass on his knowledge to the next generation. Along with a group of friends, he learned Silambam secretly from a suitable master for three years before the master's demise. After shifting his focus to Kabaddi and participating in national-level tournaments, Praveen decided to create opportunities for children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Today, he teaches Silambam to approximately 450 students aged between 6 and 14, while also training nearly 55 students in Kabaddi and athletics. Praveen's students, who come from underprivileged families, have achieved remarkable success. They have secured multiple awards and entered prestigious record books, including the Nobel World Record, the Cholan Book of Records, and the Asian Book of Records. Notably, they even set a world record by performing Silambam continuously as a group for five hours. Praveen's teaching methods go beyond martial arts, incorporating brain yoga and even playing the piano while performing Silambam. The students have showcased their skills at state and national-level events, with several participants winning first prizes in various categories. With a selfless approach, Praveen runs the academy solely on his salary, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder the students' progress. Despite facing challenges, Praveen's dedication and passion have shaped confident and mature individuals, as acknowledged by parents and students alike. V Praveen Kumar's commitment to empowering underprivileged youth through Silambam and Kabaddi training is a testament to the transformative power of sports and mentorship.
