A New Species of Catfish Named After the People!
A brand-new species of catfish has been found and it has been named after the general public. The new fish Horaglanis populi was discovered in a well in Mallapally Charivupurayam in Kerala. The term 'populi' stands for people in Latin. The fish is known as Kurudanmuzhi because it is it doesn't have eyes. The barely 31mm long fish possesses sensitive whiskers, shorthand feathers, and transparent skin that makes it possible to view inside its body. The finding of the new species is significant because it demonstrates the state’s scientific knowledge and emphasizes the value of citizen participation in scientific research. Horaglanis populi, the fish's scientific name, honors the public for its role in the discovery. This is a new species of underground fish, according to a research team led by Dr. Rajeev Raghavan of Kufos. Their findings were published in the international journal Vertebrate Zoology. Twelve of the country's 18 new ground fish species have been found in Kerala, which has been the site of numerous groundfish species discoveries. The finding of the new fish advances our understanding of the area's distinctive biodiversity.
