Weaving Sustainability: The EcoKaari Journey

Imagine a world where waste becomes a source of beauty and empowerment. This is the vision driving EcoKaari, a dynamic social enterprise founded by Pune-based Nandan Bhat in September 2020. With a mission to redefine sustainability in artisanal crafts, EcoKaari emerged from a passionate desire to foster a community rooted in bottom-up development. Their unique name, blending 'Eco' (eco-friendly) and 'Kaari' (artisan), perfectly captures their commitment to uniting artisans and the environment through innovative and ethical practices. Upcycling for the Planet Climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our generation, and EcoKaari takes it seriously. The enterprise upcycles waste plastic into beautiful handcrafted fabrics using traditional tools like the charkha (spindle) and handloom. This fabric, crafted by women and youth from humble backgrounds, is then transformed into a range of contemporary designs. EcoKaari sources waste plastic from large-scale collectors and eco-conscious consumers. Any plastic that cannot be used is donated to organizations that convert it into fuel. Sustainable Fashion: A New Paradigm EcoKaari’s upcycling process is entirely manual, avoiding the use of heat, electricity, or chemicals. This green process transforms waste plastic into upcycled handwoven fabric, which is then used to make various products, from handbags and fashion accessories to home decor and office stationery. Each product requires between 7 to 50 plastic bags to create. The Craftpreneur’s Journey Nandan Bhat, a successful craftpreneur, has been at the forefront of innovative upcycling. Despite the growing interest in sustainable products, the labor-intensive nature of their upcycling process results in higher costs, posing a disadvantage. Funding remains a challenge, as does waste segregation, which is crucial to their upcycling process. Despite these obstacles, Bhat remains optimistic. He draws parallels between nurturing a startup and growing a crop—both require patience, care, and the right conditions to thrive. Eco-Artist Extraordinaire: Recycling Discarded Items into Stunning Works of Art

Vishwanath Mallabadi Davangere is an inspirational eco-artist, with a passion for upcycling discarded items into stunning works of art. From metal and plastic to old gadgets, this Bangalore-based artist diligently selects only the finest “good stuff” with potential for transformation. His art ranges from jewellery and sculptures to abstract pieces, installations, and even robots. Vishwanath's dedication to recycling is more crucial than ever in light of the e-waste catastrophe that India is currently experiencing. He focuses on finding objects that are functional based on their texture, color, and form, such as copper, gold, and multicolored wires, keyboards, and computer parts. By using this strategy, he is able to effectively recycle materials that would otherwise be thrown away and contribute to the expanding e-waste problem. Although Vishwanath's father was a well-known sculptor and painter when he was a child, he hoped that his son would become a doctor. But Vishwanath had other plans. He chose to pursue a degree in applied art since he was attracted by upcycling used items since a young age. Vishwanath couldn't get rid of his enthusiasm for eco-art, even though he was a high-level executive at Wipro and worked in talent transformation. He devoted his weekends and leisure time to experimenting with e-waste and producing one-of-a-kind works of art. The best thing is that it has since developed into a prosperous business! Vishwanath began selling his one-of-a-kind eco-art works after he retired two years ago, and he has now amassed a large international clientele, including purchasers from Delhi, the Netherlands, the United States, and Europe. He is now an example of how converting a passion into a business can result in an exciting and rewarding profession.

Eco-Friendly and Fabulous: The Benefits of Upcycling Your Waste

Upcycling is the new wave of waste management, and yes anyone can do it easily.  We now have to use the sources and products creatively and cautiously due to the growing rates of pollution, climate change, and environmental degradation. As they say, "One man's trash is another man's treasure." Upcycling is one of the innovative concepts; it involves transforming waste materials, byproducts, or abandoned objects into something appealing, useful, and valuable. It's like using your imagination and inventiveness to give worthless stuff a new significance! All of this is possible because science exists to protect Mother Earth!   An Additional Emphasis on the Word "Upcycling" ~ It is the process of giving anything that is no longer in use a new purpose and a second life. By doing this, the final result frequently improves from its original state in terms of usefulness, value, and beauty. Recycling and upcycling are not the same thing. Recycling is the process of taking used materials, mostly plastic, paper, metal, and glass, and breaking them down so that their basic components can be used to create new, frequently lower-quality consumer goods. On the other hand, you don't break down the materials when you upcycle something. You might be reshaping it. It's made of the same materials as when you started, just like when you cut a T-shirt into yarn strips. Furthermore, the repurposed object is usually of an equivalent or higher quality than the original. Since upcycling repurposes resources rather than discarding them, it is significant. Naturally, less landfill waste is better for the environment. The way we do things has social and community benefits in addition to environmental ones.
