School Radio To Improve Childrens’ Communication Skills
School Radio Programme is an initiative by Digital School that has been launched in many schools in Vishakapatnam to provide opportunities to children to improve their communication skills. Each school where the programme is launched forms a radio club consisting of 50 children (from class V to X) and five teachers. Then, school radio experts organise a three-day workshop for them in which students and teachers get trained in content development, presentation skills, recording and editing of voices. Later on, every month, students and teachers of respective schools speak on a selected topic of their choice such as segregation of waste, personal hygiene, etc. Their voices are recorded, basic editing is done on Audacity, which is a free open source digital audio editor, then the files are converted into MP3 and sent to school radio for webcasting. Aruna Gali, founder of School Radio, said that after the files are received from each school, it is webcasted in an online platform called www.schoolradio.in. This enables all students from various schools to have access to voices of other students online. Thus, School Radio helps young minds grow from being just passive listeners to taking more active roles as producers and broadcasters.
