Kalaburagi Students Make History as First Indian School to Win NASA’s Global Space Settlement Design Contest
Bringing pride to India and placing Kalaburagi on the global innovation map, S.R.N. Mehta CBSE School has etched its name in history by becoming the first Indian school to win the NASA Ames Research Center–National Space Society (NSS) Space Settlement Design Contest 2025 in the 8th-grade category. Their pioneering project, IRA, showcased exceptional imagination and scientific understanding in designing a self-sustaining space colony.The competition witnessed entries from over 4,900 students across 25 countries, making the victory even more remarkable for the young Indian innovators.IRA: A Vision for Sustainable Space LivingThe winning project, titled IRA, was the result of collaborative effort and months of dedication by a team of 11 students: Aarna Adarsh, Deepika, Khushi, Poorvaja, Pranati, Saanika, Shambhavi, Sharan, Shreya, Zaisha Falak, and Nihar. Guided by their principal, Rajashekhar Reddy, the students envisioned a sustainable, livable space colony that could pave the way for humanity’s future beyond Earth.Their project wasn’t just creative—it was scientifically sound and futuristic, addressing real-world challenges.A Global Stage at ISDC 2025The students were invited to present IRA at the International Space Development Conference (ISDC-2025) in Orlando, Florida, USA, held from June 19 to 22. On June 21, they presented their ideas through posters and oral sessions before an audience of 250+ leading scientists, astronauts, and space dignitaries. Their confidence and depth of understanding earned admiration from experts across the globe.As part of their journey, the students also visited NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, where they toured rocket launch sites, explored cutting-edge space technology, and interacted with astronauts—an experience that inspired them to pursue careers in space science and technology.Inspiration for the NationReturning to India on June 30, the team brought back not only a trophy but also a powerful message: when young minds are nurtured with curiosity and courage, global milestones are within reach.Principal Rajashekhar Reddy described the win as a moment of national pride, saying, “This victory reflects our commitment to fostering scientific excellence and preparing our students for global challenges.” The school’s management congratulated the students, teachers, and parents for this landmark achievement, describing it as a proud moment for the school, the region, and the entire country.
