Mysterious blue lights on waves leave tourists spellbound

The beautiful bioluminescent waves at Bheemili Beach in Visakhapatnam have become the talk of the town, drawing crowds of curious locals and tourists alike. The rare natural occurrence has left visitors enchanted by the beauty of nature. The phenomenon was discovered by a group of M Tech students from Andhra University during a long drive in the night. They captured the enchanting sight on camera and shared it on social media, which quickly went viral. Dr. Janakiram, a professor in the department of marine living resources at Andhra University, explained to TNIE that the motion of the waves awakens small marine organisms known as phytoplankton, which create a dazzling blue light. The bioluminescent diatoms Noctiluca and Sorecium, which are present, contributed to the enchanting atmosphere on Visakhapatnam's beaches. While the bioluminescence is not harmful to humans, local authorities have advised visitors to observe it responsibly and protect the fragile ecosystem. India is home to several beaches where bioluminescence can be observed, including the Lakshadweep Islands, Andaman and Nicobar’s Havelock Island and Radhanagar Beach, and the Konkan region of Maharashtra. A similar phenomenon was observed at Chennai’s Marina Beach, where the waves glow with a blue-green light due to the phytoplankton. The bioluminescent waves at Bheemili Beach are a reminder of the magical power of nature and a call to protect our natural resources.
