Mumbai Police Leads the Charge with 'No Honking Day' Campaign
To address the growing issue of noise pollution and its adverse effects on health, Mumbai Police has taken a proactive step by designating a special day called 'No Honking Day.' On Wednesday, the city will experience a temporary respite from the incessant noise as the police encourage residents to be more conscious of their honking habits. The initiative aims to raise awareness and sensitivity towards noise pollution, promoting a healthier environment for everyone. Mumbai Police has urged drivers to avoid unnecessary honking and adhere to the guidelines outlined in Rule No.119 of the Central Motors Vehicle Rules of 1989. As part of the 'No Honking Campaign,' launched on Tuesday, the police have been actively encouraging people to reduce honking while driving. The campaign emphasizes the importance of minimizing noise pollution for the well-being of both individuals and the community as a whole. In an official notice, the Mumbai Police Traffic Control Branch announced, "Traffic Control Branch, Mumbai, urges all drivers and riders in Mumbai city, except for ambulances, fire brigades, and other vehicles on emergency duties, not to honk their vehicle horns on 14th June and other days as well." This clear message demonstrates the commitment of the police to tackle noise pollution and create a quieter city environment. Studies, including one conducted by the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), have highlighted the severe health complications caused by noise pollution, with traffic noise being a significant contributor. It is known to affect hearing, increase stress levels, and impair cognitive function. To combat this issue, the Supreme Court and High Courts have established guidelines and restrictions on noise levels and horn usage, particularly in residential and silence zones like hospitals, schools and religious places. The 'No Honking Day' initiative undertaken by the Mumbai Police serves as a reminder for individuals to reflect upon their honking habits and their impact on public health. By reducing noise pollution, we can create a calmer and healthier environment for all. It is crucial that we continue to implement noise control measures, raise awareness about the detrimental effects of excessive honking, and promote responsible driving habits to ensure a peaceful and sustainable future.
