A Boost to Local Industries As Mumbai University Plans to Offer Skill-Based Courses
Mumbai University is planning to provide a new range of skill-based courses that will provide employment opportunities to the youth and give a thrust to the local industries. The courses may vary according to regions, for example, rainwater conservation, agronomy in Raigad, Ratnagiri; management of airports in Panvel; animal husbandry, floriculture in Palghar; pollution, wastewater management in Konkan; marine tourism, heritage tourism in Mumbai. Tailor-Made Courses The university plans to design courses relevant to different regions. Courses range from fruit processing and bamboo production in Konkan to Warli painting in Palghar. The courses will be offered as certificate, diploma and advanced diploma to students pursuing traditional arts, science, and commerce. The courses are job oriented so that the youth won’t migrate to Mumbai and other cities for employment. Stop Migration The main objective of introducing the skill-based courses in Mumbai University is to better the gross enrolment ratio so that more people get employment in the local industries. Region-specific courses will help enhance the local industries and provide employment opportunities to students from different regions. On the suggestion from the state government, 11 public universities are planning to offer more than 2000 skill-based courses across affiliated colleges over five years.
