Women are enforcing liquor ban in Bihar
The alcohol ban has come as a boon to the women of Bihar as murders and gang robberies are down almost 20 percent from a year earlier, and riots 13 percent. Fatal traffic accidents fell 10 percent. Yet, there are people who are illegally making and selling alcohol. The women of Bihar are up in arms to counter these troublemakers and are ensuring that the prohibition is in place. Bihar is an agrarian state and the income of people is low. Yet most men used to routinely spend much of their money on alcohol, further impoverishing their families. Raj Kumar Prasad, chief of the Halsi police station, which oversees 50 villages, including Bandol said that it was the acceptable norm to be drunk. The law imposing severe penalties for the sale and consumption of alcohol has worked as a deterrent and many men have stopped consuming liquor, much to the relief of their family. Crime rate has reduced and people are spending more on bikes and appliances. The credit goes to the women who have worked hard to ensure that the ban is implemented totally. Women show up at the houses of the biggest drinkers demanding them to stop. Omprakash Chandrawanshi, a driver had made his family's lives miserable by spending more than half of his income on alcohol. He said that the group of women scared him out of his habit. Now, he is able to buy more food and pay for his child’s tutorials. The women also conduct raids and chase the people who make and sell illegal alcohol and get them arrested. They had also formed a human chain in support of the ban.
