India takes charge of Unit 1 of Kudankulam plant
The Russian firm which collaborated in building the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant, India's largest nuclear power generation unit has handed over full responsibility of its Unit 1 operations to India. A joint statement was signed by Moscow-based ASE Group of Companies, a subsidiary of ROSATOM State Atomic Energy Corporation and the Nuclear Power Corporation of India confirming the fulfillment of all warranty terms and obligations of the overseas contractor. ASE Vice-President Andrei Lebedev for South Asia projects said that the warranty period run showed reliable and safe operation of the Unit 1. Therefore, the Indian side confirms that ASE Group of Companies, which is general contractor, has fulfilled all its tasks in full and accurately. He added that henceforth India will be totally responsible for the operations of Unit 1 of the Kudankulam plant. The commercial operation and the warranty period of Unit 1 of KNPP commenced in December 2014. The second unit of the Kudankulam plant began commercial operations on March 31, 2017. Both the KNPP units I and II are located in Tamil Nadu. They have been built with Russian collaboration and possess a capacity of 1,000 MW. Units III and IV are under construction, at present. The first two units of the Kudankulam nuclear plant are the largest nuclear power generation units in the country.
