This is the story of the courage and loyalty of man’s best friend who in the time of danger took on a much bigger adversary to protect its master ‘Tiger’ is the four-year-old pet dog of Aruna Lama who is a 58-year-old Darjeeling resident. When Aruna heard noises coming from the storeroom where she kept live chicken, she went to investigate and was aghast to see a leopard staring at her. She panicked and was about to retreat, but the leopard pounced on her and sunk its claws into her. Seeing his owner’s life in peril, Tiger- a cross between a Tibetan mastiff and a mongrel- at once dived headlong at the leopard and started barking ferociously. The leopard was caught unawares and fled away in fear. Aruna who sustained an injury in the head and ears received 20 stitches and is undergoing treatment in hospital. What is remarkable about this story is that Aruna had a few years ago, found Tiger, skinny with hunger and had begun to feed him daily. She tried to send him away to his original owners, but it would keep coming back to her. Finally, she decided to take him in. A kind deed by Aruna years ago has come around as Tiger repaid his debt.
