Kiribati, a gorgeous island nation comprised of 33 atolls, has taken the lead as the first to welcome 2024 in the rich tapestry of worldwide celebrations welcoming in the new year. Kiribati's Line Islands are at the forefront of this chronological milestone, demonstrating the country's unique geographical position straddling the equatorial Pacific.
This distinction was not always theirs. Kiribati's relationship with the International Date Line was changed in 1994 by a dramatic shift in time zones. This change, which moved the line more than 1,000 kilometers eastward within Kiribati's territory, was made as part of a deliberate plan to unify the country under a single time zone, removing the uncertainty caused by a divided date line.
Kiribati was once divided into two days due to its location, and it struggled with the challenges of being located over the Date Line while sections of the Line Islands were geographically farther east than Hawaii. The decision to combine the country's time zones moved all of Kiribati into the Asian side of the Date Line, uniting the island nation under three time zones and removing the citizens' permanent duality of dates.
As the Line Islands approached the first sunrise of the New Year, traditional Kiribati celebrations took place. Locals celebrated this time transition with traditional cuisine, including exquisite roast pig and crayfish, as well as the perennial favorite of coconut sap beverages.
While no significant activities were planned on Kiritimati's main island, the joy among Line Islanders reflected the spirit of community and eagerness to welcome the new year.
