This may seem straight out of a sci-fi movie as NASA gears up to develop a surveyor that can detect and destroy asteroids, comets, or other such objects that may pose a threat to our planet.
A new space-based surveyor that will help classify millions of near-Earth objects has now passed a thorough technical evaluation and is ready for budgeting and construction.
While history has demonstrated that larger ones can be catastrophic, these objects have the potential to cause major regional destruction. Although luck has been on humanity's side thus far, slow-growing wisdom has led NASA to establish a Planetary Defense Coordination Office in order to figure out how to safeguard Earth against such occurrences.
At least 90% of the near-Earth objects larger than 140 meters (460 feet) in diameter that passes within 30 million miles of the orbit of our planet will now be found and identified by the NEO Surveyor mission.
Lindley Johnson, NASA’s Planetary Defense Officer at PDCO stated that while ground-based telescopes are still necessary for us to keep an eye on the sky, a space-based infrared observatory is the ultimate high ground that will support NASA's planetary defense strategy.
NEO Surveyor will view the solar system in the infrared spectrum of light. That means it will be able to detect even those objects in space that don’t reflect light. This is one great mission that is bound to protect the earth for eons.
