Dr Gajanan D Muratkar, also known as the "grass man of India," is a renowned expert in the field of grassland management and conservation. With over four decades of experience in this field, Dr Muratkar has dedicated his life to researching and promoting the importance of grasslands in India.
One of his major contributions to the field is the development of the "Muratkar method," a revolutionary approach to grassland management that focuses on the use of native grass species to improve soil fertility and promote sustainable land use. Through this method, Dr Muratkar has successfully revitalized degraded grasslands across India, leading to increased agricultural productivity and environmental conservation.
In addition to his work in grassland management, Dr Muratkar is also actively involved in several environmental conservation initiatives across the country. He has served as a consultant to numerous government agencies and non-profit organizations and has used his technique to create meadows in several Tiger Reserves and Protected Areas in 12 states across the country.
In his work, Muratkar says, "People give more importance to forests than focusing on grasslands, which are directly associated with wildlife. Grasses play an important role in soil moisture conservation, water conservation, micro, and macro habitats and are the basic producers of the forest ecosystem.”
Dr Muratkar's work has significantly impacted the grassland ecosystem in India, and his efforts have been instrumental in conserving these vital resources. He is truly a pioneer in the field of grassland management, and his dedication to this cause is an inspiration to all.
