In the vibrant city of Madikeri in Karnataka, a unique celebration called Madikeri Dasara brings together individuals from various professions who share a common love for arts. Amidst their daily work as electricians, plumbers, auto-rickshaw drivers, civil workers, and realtors, these individuals find solace in expressing their artistic talents during this grand festival.
During Madikeri Dasara, which is renowned for its distinctive celebrations, ten temple committees organize a series of events that culminate in a spectacular live tableau show. On the auspicious night of Vijayadashami, Hindu mythology comes alive through these visually captivating tableaus, narrating compelling stories. What makes this celebration exceptional is that it transcends religious, caste, and class barriers, providing a platform for hidden artists to showcase their talent and gain recognition.
To pursue their artistic passions, these individuals often face the challenge of securing funding. However, Madikeri Dasara offers them an opportunity to indulge in their creativity, as the temple committees provide financial support. For fifteen years, Naveen Raghavan, a realtor, has been actively involved in the Dasara tableau work, evolving the art form over time.
The efforts of these dedicated artists are evident in the massive effigies of deities and demons that adorn two to three tractors during the grand tableau parade. These intricate sculptures, accompanied by sound and light systems, captivate the audience during the 20-minute shows. The artists invest months of hard work and dedication, coming together as a team to create awe-inspiring tableaus.
Madikeri Dasara not only preserves traditional art forms but also serves as a platform for the younger generation. Even high school students actively contribute to the tableau workshops, carrying forward the artistic legacy of this vibrant festival.
