India has announced plans to build a new airport in the Minicoy Island of Lakshadweep, aiming to boost tourism and enhance surveillance capabilities in the region. The decision comes amidst a diplomatic dispute between India and Maldives over derogatory remarks made against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

According to government sources cited by news agency ANI, the proposed airport will serve both military and civilian aircraft. It will have the capacity to operate fighter jets, military transport planes, and commercial flights. Currently, there is only one airstrip in Agatti Island, which limits the types of aircraft that can operate there.

The development of a joint-use airfield in Minicoy has been a long-standing proposal, but the decision to proceed with it now marks a significant step forward. The new airport is expected to promote tourism in Lakshadweep and strengthen surveillance capabilities over the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean region.

The Indian Coast Guard initially proposed the development of the airfield, and the Indian Air Force (IAF) is expected to lead the operations once the airport becomes operational. The diplomatic row between India and Maldives was triggered by derogatory remarks made by three Maldivian leaders against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
