Scientists discover the hottest planet until now designating it as KELT-9b. It has a temperature of about 4,326 degree Celsius on its day side!
KELT-9b is an exoplanet revolving around its star named as KELT-9. It looks like Jupiter and is 650 light-years away from the Earth. It is warmer than all the known stars and planets except our Sun to which it is 926 degree Celsius cooler. It has a glowing gas tail. The reason behind this is the intense ultraviolet radiation from its star that makes the planet burn and evaporates. The planet is tidally locked to its star. The planet is so hot that molecules of water, methane and carbon-di-oxide cannot form here. Though it is 2.8 times massive than Jupiter its density is only half of Jupiter. It looks huge due to its puffed balloon-like atmosphere caused by its star’s intense radiation glare.
Scott Gaudi, a professor at the Ohio State University in the U.S. and lead author of the study published in the journal Nature said that the KELT-9b is in all terms a planet if we consider its mass, but it has a very different temperature which was until now unreported.
