While news about the felling of trees to make way for development is causing disappointment and worry to environmentalists, citizens can now heave a sigh of relief as government plans to build a green wall in Northwest India. The ambitious 1400 km long and 5 km wide green belt will entail a massive afforestation drive from Gujarat to Delhi.
Green Wall To Combat Climate Change
The green wall if approved will help to combat the problems of land degradation across the Thar desert and the Aravali range. It will also prove to be an effective tool to counter climate change and desertification. The wall can also act as a dust barrier in northern regions of India which are prone to dust storms owing to their proximity to the desert.
A similar green wall is being made in Africa where 15% of work is completed with the plantation of millions of trees in Senegal, Nigeria and Ethiopia.
Farmers And Landholders To Be Roped In
Speaking to The Times Of India, a government official said that farmers and landholders will form an important part and play a major role in the massive afforestation program. The green wall is the need of the hour in Gujarat, Rajasthan and Delhi, where over 50% of the land area is degraded and prone to desertification.
Excessive deforestation in these areas has led to the degradation of lands which have affected the livelihood of people and adversely impacted the biodiversity of the region. A green wall will go a long way in curbing the damage and restoring nature and the environment.
