In a giant leap towards self-reliance and maritime supremacy, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has unveiled a game-changing innovation - an indigenous high-pressure polymeric membrane for seawater desalination. Developed by the Kanpur-based Defence Materials Stores and Research & Development Establishment (DMSRDE) in a record eight months, this cutting-edge technology is set to revolutionize the Indian Coast Guard's (ICG) operational capabilities.

The special membrane helps improve the process of turning seawater into drinkable water. This new membrane works well even in very salty conditions by protecting against harmful chloride ions. It’s mainly designed for use in desalination units on Offshore Patrolling Vessels (OPVs), helping them get clean water more efficiently while at sea.

The nanoporous multilayered polymeric membrane addresses the critical challenge of chemical instability in saline environments. With a little modification, the technology's potential extends beyond the coast guard, offering a lifeline to coastal communities struggling with water scarcity. With its ability to provide clean drinking water, this innovation can transform the lives of millions, improving their overall well-being and quality of life.

After successfully completing initial technical trials on an Offshore Patrolling Vessel (OPV), the membrane will undergo 500 hours of rigorous operational testing before receiving final clearance. This critical step will ensure the technology's reliability and efficiency in real-world conditions. Upon completion, the membrane will be integrated into ICG vessels, marking a significant milestone in India's journey towards technological self-reliance.
