Before earning its spot on The New York Times' prestigious list of the "52 Best Places to Visit in 2021," Kadiya Dhro in Bhuj, Gujarat, remained elusive, absent even from Google Maps. Carved over millennia by the flow of the Bhaiad River through layers of sandstone and shale, this breathtaking canyon reflects the forces of nature. Nestled approximately 32 kilometers from Bhuj, Kadiya Dhro, also known as Mamai Dev Kaliya Dhrow, emerges as a hidden gem in Gujarat. Often hailed as the "Grand Canyon of India," its allure lies in the harmonious blend of natural beauty, geological marvels, and rich historical significance.

After flowing for around five to six months a year, the Bhaiad River splits into little ponds that are dispersed across Kadiya Dhro. These ponds are widely renowned for housing crocodiles, which can survive in saltwater. Fishes also thrive in these water bodies.Thus, diving into the ocean might be risky. Two Kutchi words—Kadiya, which means craftsman, and Dhrow, which means tiny pond—combine to form the term Kadiya Dhro. Kadiya Dhro's scenery, which is made up of vibrant sandstone and shale, unmistakably resembles the creation of a craftsman. Traveler Varun Suchday found Kadiya Dhro, which is surrounded by dry deciduous woodlands, during the shutdown in 2020.
