"Dream, Dream, Dream! Conduct these dreams into thoughts, and then transform them into action."

Colonel Sofia Quraishi isn’t just an officer in the Indian Army — she’s a symbol of courage, conviction, and quiet leadership. On May 7, 2025, she stood at the forefront of the nation’s most high-profile military briefings, detailing the successful execution of Operation Sindoor — a precision strike on nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, carried out in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives.
As one of the two women officers entrusted with briefing the media after the operation, Col Quraishi represented a powerful shift in the traditionally male-dominated defence space.
Born in Vadodara, Gujarat, in 1974, Col Quraishi grew up in a family steeped in military values. Her grandfather served as a religious teacher in the Army, and today, she is married to an officer in the Mechanised Infantry. The call to serve runs deep — and so does the discipline it demands.
A postgraduate in Biochemistry from Maharaja Sayajirao University (1997), she joined the Corps of Signals in 1999, embarking on a journey that would place her among the most respected officers in the Indian Armed Forces.
In 2016, Col Quraishi scripted history by becoming the first Indian woman officer to lead an Indian contingent at a multinational military exercise.
At ASEAN Plus 'Force 18', she was also the only woman commander among participants from 18 countries — a rare honour, and one she carried with dignity.
Her leadership has not gone unnoticed. From Operation Parakram in 2001, where she played a key role during the troop mobilisation along the Punjab border after the Parliament attack, to earning a Commendation Card from the GOC-in-C, Col Quraishi has time and again proven her mettle in high-pressure scenarios.
Her service also extended beyond national boundaries. Between 2006 and 2012, she served in the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Congo, contributing to efforts to restore stability in conflict zones. For her, peacekeeping was not just duty — it was a moment of pride.
She also lent her expertise during flood relief operations in Northeast India, where her mastery in communication systems earned her another commendation — this time from the Signal Officer-in-Chief.
Colonel Sofia Quraishi exemplifies a rare blend of humility and resolve. Whether addressing the nation after a covert strike or guiding troops across international terrain, she brings with her the essence of true leadership — one that uplifts, protects, and inspires.
In a world where strength is often measured by volume, Col Quraishi proves that courage can also speak in calm, clear tones — and still be heard loud and proud across the nation.
