Imagine in the future if railway stations could serve as urban hubs that connect not just different areas of a single city but also several cities. This idea can soon become a reality as the Indian Railways undertake revamping and modernization of thousand stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.
According to officials, the small stations will be determined based on the cities they serve as well as their footfalls.
The goal is to identify emerging cities with potential and envision railroad stations as city centers that, in the future, will connect not just diverse areas of the city but also numerous cities. Everything that is connected to it, including bridges and various kinds of transportation, will be mapped.
A separate fund will be set aside with the divisional railway managers (DRMs) for this objective and the modernization work will begin in a phased manner.
The modernization of these stations would entail wider roads, better lighting, the elimination of unneeded structures, correctly designed signage, designated pedestrian walkways, well-planned parking areas, and better station approaches to enable seamless access, among other things.
To make the station a pleasurable experience for the visitors, landscaping, green spaces, and local art and culture shall be incorporated with the assistance of qualified professionals. All this will ensure an enjoyable experience for rail passengers.
