A three day long mega exhibition tagged 'Zero Garbage Fest' was conducted in Navi Mumbai by the solid waste management wing of Panvel City Municipal Corporation (PCMC) from November 17 to 19 with the aim of making the city garbage free and find a mention among top ten cities in the nation-wide Swachh Survekshan drive beginning from January 4, 2018.
Visitors at the expo had an enlightening experience as they learned the process of segregation of kitchen waste and process of composting. They demanded that more such exhibitions should be held to educate people to follow simple tips to convert kitchen waste into compost and reduce the menace of dumping.
Mangal Kamble, head of Swachh Kharghar Manch after visiting the expo said that it was a fantastic concept to connect people wilt cleanliness campaigns. He said that the knowledge gained from the expo can be replicated in their society so that it gets featured in the zero garbage league.
PCMC chief Dr. Sudhakar Shinde said that they had earlier imposed a blanket ban on plastic irrespective of microns so that the city finds a top place in the list of cleanest cities in the country. Now, they have decided to enforce the directive of not picking the garbage from societies where segregation of dry and wet waste norm is not adhered to from December 1.
He added that the exhibition was arranged to teach people the methods that would lead to zero waste and the response was encouraging.
