It was a proud moment for India when in a tense shootout, goalkeeper Savita managed a stunning save and helped India lift the Asia Cup. After China equaled the score 1-1, India defeated them in the shootout 5-4, thus breaking the 13-year-old jinx to win the Cup at the Kakamigahara Kawasaki Stadium in Japan.
With this win, India has qualified for the World Cup. Rani’s final goal and Savita’s impressive defence helped India clinch the trophy. In the shootout, Rani scored twice while Monica, Lilima Minz and Navjot scored a goal each.
In the 25th minute of the game, Navjot Kaur scored the lone goal. Even though India proved to be a good attacking side, the Chinese were very resolute in their defence and didn’t allow them to concede any further goal. In the 47th minute, Tiantian Luo of China converted a penalty corner to score a late equiliser.
After the equiliser, India upped their ante desperately trying to find a gap, but the Chinese players didn’t give in. Finally, in the shootout, India scored brilliantly while goalkeeper Savita made a stunning save to win the title.
Last time India won the Cup was in the year 2004. Therefore, this thrilling win has made Indians happy and the Prime minister conveyed his congratulatory message to the team and praised them for their stellar performance. Earlier, this year, the men’s team had also emerged as the Asia Cup champions.
