Gouri S Naik of Ganesh Nagar, Sirsi in Uttara Kannada, Karnataka, is an example of determination and hard work as she single handedly dug a well, until she struck water at 60 feet. She needed water for her coconut and areca plants, but did not have enough money to build a well.
She took the bold decision of digging a well all by herself and she did succeed in getting water after working tirelessly for 3 months. She dug a 60 feet deep well and now she has a readily available source of water.
Everyday, she would toil for 5-6 hours, digging four feet into the ground. Only towards the end, as she was nearing 60 feet, did she take help from three other women to lift out the dirt. The deep well has 7 feet of water in it.
Gouri is a mother of one and a daily-wager who works as a laborer in Ganesh Nagar. She is also a member of Dharmasthala Rural Development Scheme. She has also grown around 150 areca, 15 coconut and some banana trees around her home. It is to water these trees that she decided to dig a well.
Vinoda, a scheme officer said that when Gouri would come to the meeting, she world complain of body ache, but they didn't know that she was digging a well. Only when they visited her home, they realized that she had single handedly dug up a 60 feet deep well.
