The skies have become a new measure of global power, and India's wings are soaring higher than ever. In a major recognition of its growing military capability, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has been ranked the 6th most powerful air force in the world in the Global Air Powers Ranking 2026, released by the World Directory of Modern Military Aircraft (WDMMA).
The achievement places India ahead of countries such as China, Japan, Israel, and France, reinforcing its position as one of the world's leading air powers.
Unlike conventional rankings that focus only on fleet size, the WDMMA evaluates air forces using its proprietary TruVal Rating (TVR) system—a comprehensive assessment that measures overall combat capability.
The ranking considers several critical factors, including modernization, logistical support, offensive and defensive capabilities, aircraft diversity, training infrastructure, special mission aircraft, transport fleets and bomber strength. This means that quality, readiness, and operational balance matter far more than simply having the largest number of aircraft.
According to the 2026 rankings, the United States Air Force (USAF) continues to dominate global military aviation, securing the highest TVR score of 242.9.
The Top 10 rankings are:
The Indian Air Force earned its place through a combination of operational excellence and continuous modernization. With a fleet of more than 1,700 aircraft, the IAF maintains a balanced mix of fighter jets, transport aircraft, helicopters, surveillance platforms, and air defence systems capable of handling a wide range of missions.
Over the years, India has steadily strengthened its aerial capabilities through the induction of advanced aircraft, improved logistics, enhanced training, and better operational preparedness. Rather than depending solely on fleet size, the IAF's emphasis on versatility and readiness has helped it climb among the world's elite air forces.
The WDMMA currently tracks 48,082 military aircraft across 129 air services in 103 countries, making it one of the most comprehensive databases of global military aviation. Its ranking methodology goes beyond counting aircraft, examining how effectively each nation can deploy, sustain, and support its air assets during operations.
The Indian Air Force's sixth-place global ranking reflects decades of investment in modernization, operational preparedness, and technological advancement. As India continues to strengthen its defence capabilities and expand its indigenous aerospace ecosystem, this recognition highlights the country's rising stature on the global stage.
