Anmol Kharb, a 17-year-old Indian shuttler, gained notoriety for her outstanding performance at the Badminton Asia Team Championship 2024, which enabled India to defeat China 3-2. At the Badminton Asia Championship on Wednesday, Kharb faced Chinese Wu Luo Yu in her first-ever international match. She displayed a remarkable skill set and her capacity to perform well under duress. The India-China match was tied at 2-2 until the teenage player unleashed a masterful display, winning 22-20, 14-21, and 21-18 to lead India to a thrilling 3-2 victory over China in the women's team event. With PV Sindhu and Treesa-Gayatri having won two games against a stronger-ranked China, Kharb had to step up, and she did it admirably.
Who Is Anmol Kharb, the 17-Year-Old Sensation?
Hailing from Faridabad, Haryana, Anmol Kharb regards Saina Nehwal as her greatest source of inspiration. The extraordinarily gifted teenager began playing badminton at the tender age of nine and is currently the current national champion. The youthful shuttler had previously competed in and won the title in the Panchkula Krishna Khaitan juniors competition. It's interesting to note that her father, Devender Singh, used to play kabaddi and is currently employed as a lawyer in Faridabad. Kharb picked up badminton after seeing her older brother compete in the game. She started performing in Faridabad's Dayanand Public School.
The little girl from Haryana then moved her training base to the Sunrise Shuttlers Academy in Noida. She practiced for lengthy hours at the academy with her mother Rajbala Kharb by her side the entire time. At the academy, she received training from Indonesian coaches in addition to her coach Kusumm Singh. Anmol Kharb competed in the Sub-Junior Nationals in Bhagalpur in 2019 and made it to the U-13 quarterfinals before losing to Unnati Hooda. Later, she advanced to the Bhubaneshwar U-17 Sub-Junior Nationals finals. At the same location, she also participated in the U-19 Junior Nationals final. In 2019, Kharb achieved two more firsts: she finished in the semifinals of the Senior All India Ranking competition held in Visakhapatnam, and she won her first-ever U-17 All India Ranking championship in Hyderabad. Amnol Kharb advanced to the Asian Championship pre-quarterfinals in Indonesia the previous season. In Hyderabad, in the Sub-Junior Nationals, she also won the U-17 championship. With her sights set on the senior level in the next years, the 17-year-old wonder, who is presently ranked #1 in the BAI (Badminton Association of India) Rankings, is concentrating on her U-19 career.
‘’Anmol Is Brave and Intelligent’’ ~
The win was Anmol’s third consecutive one over a far higher-ranked opponent at the Asian Championships – she had earlier beaten China’s World number 149, Wu Luo Yu, 22-20, 14-21, and 21-18in the group stage, and then sealed India’s win in the semifinal over Japan by beating World number 29 Natsuki Nidaira. Both wins would be the decisive victories in the respective tie. To take the pressure on and show that kind of nerve, is very refreshing. She is fearless. The kind of strokes that she plays, come naturally to her. She is always reading the game well, wherein you can witness her intelligence.
Anmol now trains in Noida under coach Kusum Singh, once a contemporary of Saina Nehwal. Her mother, Rajbala, makes the three-hour round trip with her every day from her home in Faridabad. Her training, though, isn’t restricted solely to badminton training.“We are from Haryana so we have some traditional ways of preparing her. She drinks a lot of milk and eats halwa and bajra roti for strength. But we also have some methods that people can say are different. Every day in the morning, Anmol wakes up at 5 am and heads to a park where a former international boxer takes a physical training class. She’s one of about 40 kids but she’s the only badminton player." says her mother.
The national title, though, would be small fry compared to the Asian title she helped seal for India. While it’s a historic achievement, father Devender, who’s traveled to Malaysia, where he watched from the stands, says he doesn’t expect Anmol to change much. “She’s always been a very happy-go-lucky girl. She’s always pulling pranks. When she comes back from her training, she will come from the back gate and then hug me from behind just to scare me. Even when she wins a match or a tournament, she’ll expect a reward like a meal from a restaurant. But in particular, she will demand chocolate ice cream. Because that is something she’s not allowed to eat generally,” her father said with happiness.
