In a world where technology often feels like a force of progress, it’s rare to find a story where innovation is born from personal tragedy and compassion. For Rupesh Kumar, a Class 12 student from DPS Bokaro, a life changing moment came in the form of an accident that took the life of his father’s close friend. The helplessness he felt witnessing someone lying unattended, gasping for their last breaths, ignited a fire within him. A fire that would burn through hours of tireless work and effort to create something that could save lives.
And so, ‘Rakshak’ was born a device that would change the course of countless lives, ensuring that victims of road accidents would never be left unattended for too long again.
'Rakshak': A Ray of Hope in the Darkest Times
Rupesh’s brainchild, ‘Rakshak,’ is more than just a technological marvel. It is a lifeline, designed to respond in the critical moments following an accident. In a country where road accidents are one of the leading causes of death, with over 1.5 lakh fatalities each year, ‘Rakshak’ has the potential to drastically reduce the number of lives lost due to delayed medical intervention.
The device works by immediately sending an alert to hospitals, police stations, and the victim’s loved ones the moment an accident occurs. But it doesn’t stop there. Using a clever combination of sensors, GPS, and artificial intelligence, ‘Rakshak’ pinpoints the exact location of the accident, ensuring that help arrives quickly and efficiently.
As soon as an accident takes place, the device sends an SMS alert to hospitals within a 1-kilometer radius, allowing them to dispatch ambulances without delay. It also informs the police and the victim’s family, giving them a chance to act swiftly.
The brilliance of ‘Rakshak’ lies not only in its heartwarming intent but also in its innovative design. The device uses a combination of a microcontroller unit (MCU), sensors, GPS, SIM card, and AI to create a seamless and responsive system. At its core, the device is designed to detect sudden impacts and speed violations, sending an instant alert to the microchip that triggers the SMS notifications.
One of the key components of the device is its speed and shock detection system. When the sensors detect a vehicle’s speed exceeding the safe limit or when the impact of an accident is felt, the device automatically sends an alert. This data is then transmitted to registered family members and emergency services.
In addition, ‘Rakshak’ is linked to a mobile app where the user’s details, such as their name, blood group, and emergency contacts, are stored. This app ensures that vital information is readily available when needed the most, adding an extra layer of preparedness in critical moments.
A Vision of a Safer Future
For Rupesh, the creation of ‘Rakshak’ isn’t just about solving a problem it’s about making a real world difference. His invention is grounded in his understanding of the human need for connection, support, and, above all, timely help.
The success of ‘Rakshak’ lies not only in its groundbreaking technology but in the heart and soul that Rupesh poured into it.
His tireless efforts were recognized when the Government of India granted him a patent under the ‘Inspire Standard Award Scheme.’
And as a reward for his hard work, Rupesh is set to visit Japan in 2025, where he will have the opportunity to showcase his invention to a global audience.
But the recognition doesn’t stop there. Rupesh has represented Jharkhand at the 108th Indian Science Congress in Nagpur, bringing pride to his state and his school, DPS Bokaro.
A Family’s Pride and a Teacher’s Guidance
Behind every great invention, there is often a source of strength whether it be a supportive family, a wise mentor, or an encouraging teacher. For Rupesh, his father, Ravi Shankar Kumar, was the rock who stood by him through every challenge.
Rupesh also credits his school guide, MD Obaidullah Ansari, for providing the mentorship and support he needed to bring his vision to life.
As Rupesh looks ahead to his future, he remains as grounded as ever. His goal is clear to become a computer engineer and continue working on innovations that can change the world.
The principal of DPS Bokaro, too, is optimistic about Rupesh’s bright future. In a world that often seems filled with negativity and despair, stories like Rupesh’s remind us that there is always hope that even in the darkest times, innovation and compassion can shine through, illuminating the path to a brighter, safer future,
Rupesh Kumar’s ‘Rakshak’ is not just a device; it’s a solid example to the power of innovation born from the heartache of loss. With his ingenuity, he has created a tool that could transform the way we respond to road accidents, ensuring that no one is left alone in their final moments. In the years to come, it may be the difference between life and death for countless individuals.
And just as Rupesh’s device is saving lives, it also serves as a reminder that sometimes, the greatest inventions are born from the deepest well of empathy.
