The Maharashtra government has taken a major step to alleviate the continually existing water crisis in the arid Marathwada region by approving the ambitious Rs 16,000 crore water grid project.
Water grid means the interconnection of water pipelines and water storage within a state to eliminate water scarcity economically. The Marathwada Water Grid aims to connect 11 major dams in eight districts through pipelines to allow water to be drawn from a water-surplus reservoir and pumped to water treatment plants and from there to talukas facing water scarcity.
Marathwada region receives low rainfall due to topographical reasons and decreased rainfall for consecutive years have multiplied the water woes of the people. Therefore, the Maharashtra government envisaged this water grid project and its first phase will be rolled out in Aurangabad and Jalna districts.
Mekorot, Israel’s national water company is helping the government by providing the technology, knowledge and systems to conduct the survey, prepare a water supply master plan and to eradicate the water shortage problem totally. The company has successfully completed such water management projects in Argentina, Cyprus, Mexico and Romania.
The successful completion of the Marathwada water grid project will go a long way in solving the water crisis of this perennially parched region.
