In the remote heartlands of Uttar Pradesh, a devoted primary school teacher emerged as a ray of hope for the marginalized Kalabaj nomadic tribe. The kids from this tribe used to beg for a living until Sita Trivedi, who works at Bajhera Primary School, undertook a transformative initiative.

A Teacher’s Resolve

During a child census, Trivedi met with resistance when trying to count the kids belonging to the Kalabaj community. Although locals warned her from taking census in that community, she persisted. Her determination led her to uncover a disheartening reality - the children of this community were not attending school;  instead, they were assisting their families by begging.

From Begging to Schooling

Trivedi didn’t give up and persuaded the parents of the tribe to send their kids to school, even though elders were hesitant at first. However, the kids who joined faced some discrimination from others. For instance, during mid day meals, the regular kids wouldn’t eat with the tribal kids. 

Fostering Acceptance

Trivedi then met the parents of  regular kids and requested them to encourage their kids to mingle with these children. Her intervention bridged the divide, ensuring acceptance and inclusivity among the kids.

Empathy in Action

Furthermore, going beyond her role as an educator,  Trivedi also provided essentials like clothes and books to those in need. Her relentless efforts didn't go unnoticed, gaining praise and acknowledgment from the Basic Siksha Adhikari and District Magistrate.They lauded her initiatives and advocated to replicate them across the district. 

Through Trivedi's compassion and perseverance, the narrative for these once-begging children shifted towards a hopeful future, eradicating caste-based discrimination and fostering an inclusive society.
