India’s para archers produced a memorable performance on Tuesday as the men’s recurve and compound teams won gold at the World Archery Para Series Stage III.

The men’s compound duo of reigning world champion Toman Kumar and Shyam Sunder Swami delivered a commanding 152-139 victory over Iraq to claim the top prize. The pair stayed composed throughout the contest, combining consistent arrow execution with high scores to keep their opponents under pressure.

Harvinder Leads a Fighting Comeback

There was more gold joy in the men’s recurve event, where Harvinder Singh and Vijay Sundi defeated Slovakia 6-2. The Indian pair had a shaky start, scoring a seven and failing to hit a 10 in the opening set. Slovakia capitalised and took the early lead. But India quickly found its rhythm.

Harvinder, a double Paralympic medallist, spearheaded the comeback. The Indians won the next three sets 36-31, 38-34 and 35-31 to seal the match.

Silver for the Women’s Recurve Team

India’s women’s recurve team of Bhawna and Pooja also reached the final but had to settle for silver. The Indian pair went down 0-6 to China in a one-sided contest, with China winning the sets 34-23, 35-33 and 31-30.

India struggled to find consistency, while China maintained enough of an advantage to secure the gold.

A Narrow Miss in Compound

India came close to another medal in the women’s compound team event. Sheetal Devi and Payal Nag faced China in the bronze-medal playoff but narrowly missed out.

The Indian pair stayed within one point in the second end, trailing 73-74. However, a difficult third end allowed China to pull away and secure bronze.

With two gold medals and a silver, India’s performance on the penultimate day underlined the growing strength of its para archery contingent. The results also showcased two sides of elite sport—dominant victories and hard-fought lessons. 

For India’s para archers, the focus now turns to carrying this momentum into their next international challenge. The fourth stage of the World Archery Para Series will be held in Santiago, Chile, from October 13 to 18, 2026.
