In a significant step towards community empowerment, tribal self-help groups (SHGs) in Nirmal District,Telangana, have taken the initiative to produce Mahua oil. This endeavor not only contributes to their sustainable livelihood but also showcases their entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to preserving traditional practices.
Residing in the remote areas of the district, particularly in the hilly regions, the tribals collect seeds from the Madhuca Indica plant during the summer season. These seeds play a vital role in their livelihood, with a portion being sold to the Girijan Cooperative Corporation (GCC) while the rest are stored for personal use.
The SHGs have established a production unit in collaboration with the Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA) Utnoor and District Rural Development Agency (DRDA). The process of preparing 2 ½ liters of Mahua oil from 10 kg of seeds is labor-intensive, but the SHGs are determined to make it a success. Currently, they double filter the oil using a cloth, and plans are underway to acquire a filtering machine to enhance the production process.
With an aim to promote the oil as an ayurvedic medicine for joint pains, the SHGs are strategizing their marketing efforts, focusing on online platforms. They plan to sell the oil at Rs 800 per liter, ensuring that the product undergoes rigorous laboratory testing before dispatch.
Additionally, the SHGs are exploring collaboration with private companies for nationwide and potentially worldwide marketing of Mahua oil. This collaboration, along with the support received from ITDA and the district administration, has led to the establishment of the Sri Hanuman Joint Liability Group, which aims to expand the reach and impact of this community-driven enterprise.
