In a positive step towards inclusion and empowerment, a group of transgender individuals in Karnataka have opened a canteen in the Udupi district. The canteen is run by three friends— Poorvi, Vaishnavi, and Chandana, who formerly used to seek alms on the streets of Udupi, but now have decided to lead a self-reliant life.
They run their canteen from 1 am to 7 am when bewildered travelers traverse the city in quest of sustenance. The canteen offers a variety of snacks & tea. The night travelers and those working the night shift who leave their workplaces at unusual hours have found the canteen to be a godsend.
The canteen has already received a positive response from the community, with many customers praising the quality of the food and the friendly service.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to promote the economic empowerment and social inclusion of transgender individuals in Karnataka.
Transgender individuals in India have long faced discrimination and marginalization, with limited access to education, employment, and healthcare. The success of the canteen serves as a model for other initiatives that seek to promote the economic and social empowerment of marginalized communities. By providing opportunities for individuals to leverage their skills and talents, such initiatives can help to break down barriers and promote greater equality and inclusion in society.
