As the world prepares to celebrate the 12th International Day of Yoga, Kolkata is all set to transform into a grand stage for what could become a historic Guinness World Record. With more than 500 boats expected to perform synchronized yoga demonstrations on the Hooghly River and nearly 35,000 participants gathering at Red Road with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, West Bengal is preparing for one of the most spectacular Yoga Day celebrations ever witnessed.
The serene waters of the Hooghly are poised to become the centre of a unique yoga extravaganza. More than 500 tourist and passenger vessels, including boats from the Sunderbans, will converge at Babughat to take part in synchronized yoga sessions on June 21.
Officials from the Sunderbans Boats Association confirmed that they had received invitations from the state transport department to participate in the celebrations. Sources said authorities are considering arranging the boats in formations resembling yoga postures, adding a visual dimension to the event and strengthening the bid for a new Guinness World Record. The existing record for yoga performed on boats is also being reviewed, with preparations underway to surpass it.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will spearhead the national International Day of Yoga celebrations from Kolkata’s iconic Red Road. Around 35,000 participants are expected to join him for the mass yoga session under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”.
Hundreds of yoga instructors have been deployed to ensure smooth execution, while online and offline training sessions have already been conducted for participants. For those unable to attend in person, live telecasts will be displayed on LED screens installed at 45 major traffic intersections across the city.
Calling the event the “Homecoming of Yoga”, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari described it as a proud moment for the state. “Kolkata remains the spiritual and yoga capital of India. Many legendary yogis were born here and contributed immensely to the evolution of yoga,” he said.
Union Minister Prataprao Jadhav highlighted the global significance of the occasion, noting that Yoga Day will be celebrated at nearly 2,500 locations worldwide. He also emphasized the Yoga 365 campaign, which seeks to make yoga a daily practice rather than a once-a-year event.
The festivities began with West Bengal Day celebrations on June 20, featuring ‘Vande Yoga’, a spiritual carnival along the Hooghly’s banks. However, one of the biggest attractions will come after sunset. A fleet of 3,000 synchronized drones will light up the skies above the iconic Howrah Bridge and Vidyasagar Setu in a breathtaking display. The drone formations are expected to depict cultural and mythological themes, creating a visual feast for spectators.
From the banks of the Ganga and the mangroves of the Sunderbans to city streets and village squares, Yoga Day celebrations will resonate across West Bengal.
But it is the sight of 500 boats moving in harmony on the Hooghly and thousands practising yoga together under the morning sky that could etch Kolkata’s name into the Guinness World Records.
