Vijay Nishanth who hails from Bengaluru is the first ‘tree doctor’ a term that is unheard of in India. He grew up at a time when his city was getting rapidly urbanized. Even as a student of engineering, he was concerned about the environment and volunteered for environmental issues like animal rescue.
Soon he dropped out of engineering and began to study trees. The more he learned about them, the more he realized it was important to document them. So he undertook the first-of-its-kind digital census of the trees in Bengaluru which is now a solid document about trees.
As Nishanth continued to chronicle and learn more about trees, he discovered that there is a lack of public awareness about trees and how to care for them if something goes wrong. When trees were being injected with acid to kill them, he conducted extensive research on how to treat them through online searches and books like Vrikshayurveda.
Nishant’s passion for trees led him to discover that trees do communicate with each other using electromagnetic waves.
Nishanth also assisted in moving several trees that were marked to be cut down for several projects. These trees were carefully uprooted and relocated to another place where they were replanted.
Nishanth’s goal is to raise public awareness, particularly in a place like Bengaluru where infrastructure projects have prioritized economic development over environmental concerns.
