"Dream, Dream, Dream! Conduct these dreams into thoughts, and then transform them into action."

In a quiet corner of a housing society in Pune, an old bicycle stood covered in dust. Its tires were flat, its chain rusted, and its purpose long forgotten. For most people, it was just scrap waiting to be discarded. But for Anand Vanjape, it was something else entirely a missed opportunity. A passionate cyclist for over a decade, Anand had always believed in the power of cycling—not just as a fitness activity, but as a tool for change. In 2019, a chance encounter made him see a harsh contrast: while some people had unused bicycles lying idle, many others were walking miles every day simply because they couldn’t afford one. That moment sparked an idea that would soon grow into a powerful movement—Pedal Mission.
Founded in 2021, Pedal Mission began with a simple request: donate your unused bicycles. What started as a small effort quickly turned into a citizen-led movement. Anand began collecting old, unused cycles from housing societies across Pune. These bicycles, once forgotten, were repaired, cleaned, and restored with care. Instead of ending up as scrap, they were given a second life—and more importantly, they were given to people who truly needed them. From keeping cycles outside his shop for free use to building a network of volunteers and donors, Anand’s idea slowly gained momentum. Today, Pedal Mission operates across multiple cities, supported by local volunteers and partnerships.
At its core, Pedal Mission addresses a simple but powerful gap. On one side, there are unused bicycles gathering dust. On the other hand, there are people, especially children, who walk long distances every day to reach school or work. For many families, owning a bicycle is still a luxury. Children often spend hours commuting on foot, which affects their education and energy. For girls, the challenge is even greater. Safety concerns and long travel distances often force them to drop out of school. A bicycle changes that. It is not just a mode of transport; it is freedom. It reduces travel time, increases safety, and gives a sense of independence. For a young girl, it can mean the difference between continuing education and giving it up.
Pedal Mission has helped over 2,000 underprivileged individuals by providing them access to bicycles. But the impact goes far beyond this number. Each cycle delivered carries a story. A student reaching school on time. A worker is saving hours of daily commute. A family finding a little more stability in their routine. The initiative has also contributed significantly to sustainability.
By restoring unused bicycles, more than 30 tonnes of steel have been put back into active use.
This reduces waste, cuts down on scrap, and promotes a circular economy. In a world struggling with environmental challenges, such small actions create meaningful change.
What makes Pedal Mission unique is its structured yet community-driven approach. Volunteers play a key role in organizing donation drives, collecting bicycles, and connecting with NGOs and individuals in need. Corporate support through CSR contributions has further strengthened the initiative. Companies are not only donating funds but also encouraging sustainable mobility among employees.
The bicycles are distributed in different ways: some are given for free, some at a minimal cost, and some on a refundable deposit. This ensures accessibility while maintaining a sense of responsibility among recipients. Behind the scenes, a dedicated team works on repairing, transporting, and managing the logistics. To streamline operations, the initiative is managed by a Section 8 company, ensuring transparency and proper organization.
One of the most beautiful aspects of Pedal Mission is the human connection it creates. It brings together people from different walks of life—donors, volunteers, corporates, and beneficiaries—into a shared purpose. Imagine someone donating a bicycle they no longer use, not realizing that it will soon become a lifeline for someone else. Imagine a child receiving that bicycle and riding it to school with a smile. These moments define the true impact of the initiative.
Pedal Mission is not just an initiative; it is an invitation. An invitation to rethink what we consider waste. An invitation to contribute to a cause that is simple yet deeply impactful. Participating does not require a huge commitment. Donating an unused bicycle, volunteering time, or contributing funds can make a significant difference. Even spreading awareness helps the mission grow.
In a society where small actions often go unnoticed, Pedal Mission proves that collective effort can create large-scale change. The journey of Pedal Mission is a reminder that solutions to big problems often lie in simple ideas. A rusting bicycle, when restored, can become a vehicle of change. A small act of donation can transform someone’s daily life. As Anand Vanjape continues to expand this mission, the vision remains clear to make mobility accessible, reduce waste, and empower lives. Because sometimes, all it takes to change someone’s journey is a simple push on the pedal.
