Ram Singh, an IAS officer is so passionate about good health that he walks 10 km every week to procure fruits and vegetables from the local market. He is posted as the Deputy Commissioner of Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills and he follows this fixed routine that may seem monotonous but involves a lot of walking.
Ram Singh reveals that the purpose of walking ten kilometers is to remain fit and inspire others to lead a healthy lifestyle. He is also a crusader for the environment and shuns plastic or paper bags. In its place, he uses a bamboo basket to carry fruits and vegetables. In order to promote the growth of local farmers, he buys only local organic produce.
When most people complained about the hassle in carrying loads of vegetables while walking, Singh suggested them to carry ‘Kokcheng’ (a local bamboo basket) which would even help fight the plastic menace. Once he even posted on Instagram that he carried 21 kilograms of organic vegetables without using any plastic or paper bags.
Speaking to East Mojo, Singh said that he wanted to set an example for the people to adopt a healthy lifestyle. An added advantage is that one could avoid the traffic issue in town. Being sensitive to the environment, the Deputy Commissioner also prefers to use public transport and doesn’t even shy away from traveling to places in a shared tempo.
Even little examples set by common people can inspire many and make a difference.
