Imagine boarding a train with around 500 ambitious young people, travelling over 8,000 kilometres in just 15 days, meeting India's most inspiring entrepreneurs, and returning home with a business idea that could change lives. That's exactly what Jagriti Yatra offers.
More than just a train expedition, Jagriti Yatra is a one-of-a-kind entrepreneurial movement dedicated to "Building India Through Enterprise." Since its launch in 2008, the non-profit initiative has been inspiring young Indians to become job creators instead of job seekers, with a special focus on the untapped potential of Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, often referred to as Middle India.
Over the past 17 years, the journey has transformed the lives of more than 9,500 young participants from India and 23 countries, creating a thriving community of entrepreneurs who are driving social and economic change.
Unlike conventional leadership programmes, Jagriti Yatra turns India itself into a classroom. The 15-day expedition takes participants across 12 destinations, where they witness successful enterprises, interact with changemakers and immerse themselves in real-world examples of innovation in small towns and villages.
The experiential format helps participants understand the challenges and opportunities beyond India's metropolitan cities, encouraging them to build businesses that create meaningful impact where it is needed most.
Travelling alongside 525 fellow "Yatris" also creates an extraordinary environment for collaboration, idea-sharing and lifelong friendships.
One of the biggest attractions of Jagriti Yatra is the opportunity to engage with inspiring role models who have built organisations that have transformed communities and industries. Participants attend Role Model Sessions, where accomplished entrepreneurs share their journeys, failures and lessons from the ground.
The programme also includes panel discussions on issues of national importance, allowing Yatris to understand how entrepreneurship can address challenges in education, healthcare, agriculture, sustainability and rural development. Hands-on workshops expose participants to practical entrepreneurial skills, while networking sessions connect them with experienced mentors, investors and industry experts.
Jagriti Yatra is not just about inspiration—it is about execution. Through its Biz Gyan Tree initiative, participants develop business plans specifically designed for Middle India. They receive expert guidance to refine their ideas before pitching them to a jury, with promising ventures becoming eligible for incubation support.
The programme also features the Jagriti Enterprise Mela, a vibrant showcase of enterprises working across rural and semi-urban India. The event enables participants to learn directly from businesses already creating measurable social and economic impact.
For many aspiring entrepreneurs, the journey becomes the first step toward building sustainable enterprises with access to mentorship, market opportunities and investor networks.
What makes Jagriti Yatra truly unique is its focus on the India that often remains overlooked. Instead of concentrating solely on startup ecosystems in major cities, it encourages young innovators to discover opportunities in smaller towns and rural districts where entrepreneurship can become a powerful engine for development.
As applications open once again, the invitation is clear. Young people aged 21 to 27 can board the train as Yatris and shape the future through enterprise, while those aged 28 and above can join as facilitators to mentor the next generation.
Sometimes, the journey to changing the country begins not in a boardroom but on a train.
