It all started when a wonderful couple first met the child in Keonjhar, Orissa where this newborn was left all alone in the hospital by her biological parents immediately after her birth. On seeing this little angel the wonderful couple felt some special bonding for the infant baby. They felt as if she was meant for them. They wanted to hold the little fingers and feel the joy of parenthood. Hence they thought of adopting the cute little baby. It sounds so easy just like a fairytale....isn't it. But no it was not that easy for the wonderful couple to adopt the little angel whom they were connected at the first sight. Now the question arises why.....The answer is simple the society we are living in and the norms made by us at times becomes an aid to someone or vice versa.
Yes, it was difficult for Jeeja Gosh and her husband Bappaditya Nag to adopt the infant. As Jeeja Gosh had a disability right from her childhood.
Jeeja Gosh, 49 a very inspiring personality. Right from her childhood, she positively faced many new challenges thrown to her in different stages of her life.
Born with cerebral palsy, a condition caused because of lack of oxygen to the brain either during the pregnancy or at the time of the delivery. She did her schooling from Indian Institute of Cerebral Palsy and La Martiniere for Girls, Kolkata (Calcutta), India. Later she graduated with Honours in Sociology from the much renowned Presidency College of Kolkata. She had a great passion for knowledge hence wanted to study a lot. Further, she completed her post graduation from Delhi University and also did her second masters in Disability Studies from Leeds University, UK.
Jeeja who is always full of positivity and a great source of inspiration to many has conducted different workshops on creative writing for disabled people. As she believes in the equality of people and wants to change society and want to give an identity to people with disability. She strongly feels that society should accept this group of people with open arms and also give them a chance to prove themselves. They don't want sympathy but equal opportunity. She was also called at TEDx event. She received the Shri N.D. Diwan Memorial Award for Outstanding Professional Services in Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities by the National Society for Equal Opportunities of the Handicapped (NASEOH), Mumbai. She also received the Role Model Award from the Office of the Disability Commissioner, Government of West Bengal. A documentary directed by Swati Chakraborty and produced by PSBT made on her life I am Jeeja recently won the National Film Festival award for the best film on social issues in the non-feature film category.
She formerly worked for the Indian Institute of Cerebral Palsy as the Head of Advocacy and Disability Studies and recently branched out on her own as co-founder and partner of Ebullience Advisors that mentors NGOs and advocacy groups to provide legal advice to disabled persons.
The couple decided to adopt the child and filled for adoption. However, the legal formalities could not be completed as the question was raised whether Jeeja is fit or will she be able to take care of the infant as she falls under the group of disabled people. But truly said where there is a will there is a way.... this couple was a real fighter. Several emails were sent, medical reports were submitted to prove that even a disabled person can take care of a child. No doubt it was hard to convince but they finally were able to adopt the little angel. Done with all the legal formalities, the wonderful couple now has their bundle of joy and Jeeja enjoys the motherhood.
