In the picturesque village of Ajjaram, located in the Peravali mandal of East Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh, a unique tradition has been thriving for three generations. This village has become synonymous with the manufacturing of exquisite brass bells, which are not only used in temples across the state but have also gained recognition in religious shrines and even some churches in the United States.
Ajjaram, surrounded by the scenic Vasista River and lush paddy fields, has earned a national reputation for its brassware and bronzeware handicrafts. The brassware industry in this village has witnessed remarkable growth since India gained independence and currently holds the second position among Indian handicraft industries. With its labor-intensive nature, the industry has provided employment opportunities to thousands of people.
Previously, there were apprehensions about marrying daughters to grooms from Ajjaram, fearing they would be forced into brassware manufacturing. However, the village has defied such concerns and has become a renowned hub for brass and bronze needs.
Out of Ajjaram's population of over 2,700, approximately 2,500 individuals are actively involved in manufacturing brass items, turning it into a livelihood that spans generations. Unlike many other vocations, this industry is not limited to a specific caste. The manufacturing process, ranging from 50 grams to 500 kilograms, has evolved from manual craftsmanship to the use of machines, meeting the growing demand while transforming the lives of the villagers.
Despite recent declines in demand and a decrease in the number of workers, the artisans of Ajjaram take pride in their work. The intricate designs, meticulous craftsmanship, and attention to detail are the hallmarks of their creations. While concerns about the future of this ancient handicraft persist, the artisans remain content, finding recognition and satisfaction when their customers appreciate their work.
