With the aim of propelling the growth of the food processing industry and reducing post-harvest waste at each stage of the supply chain, the central government is launching the establishment of mega food parks across the country.
The Union Minister for Food Processing and Industries Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Friday (6 September) inaugurated the first Mega Food Park of Telangana in Lakkampally, Nizamabad.
The Mega Food Park is spread over 78 acres of land and will encompass a raw material warehouse, finished good warehouse, multi-commodity cold storage with the capacity of 5,000 metric tonnes each, and other food processing facilities. It is set up at a cost of 108.95 crores and will work to the advantage of people of Nizamabad district as well as nearby districts in Telangana and Nanded district in Maharashtra.
The food park will accommodate an additional 22 food processing units and is expected to produce a turnover of Rs 14,000 crore. The minister also stated that the food park will provide employment opportunities to over 50,000 youth in the region. By providing modern infrastructure for food processing through the supply chain from field to market, the food park will support the central government’s agenda of doubling farmer income by 2022.
