Vinaykumar Balakrishnan, a man of diverse experience, exemplifies how passion can ignite innovation. After a successful career spanning the Railways, Army, and later, banking and insurance, he had initially aimed to retire at 45 for a life of globetrotting adventures.
However, life had a different plan as after giving up his corporate career, Balakrishnan soon began his journey into the eco-friendly realm. It began when he attended a party in Dubai where he encountered edible biodegradable plates. Inspired by this, he sought to bring this innovation to India, but initial attempts failed. Undeterred, he delved into research on agricultural waste materials and found a potential solution in wheat bran.
Years of dedication and collaboration bore fruit in 2018 when the first wheat bran-based eco-friendly plate was produced. Despite challenges, including the pandemic, production continued, leading to the birth of VIR Naturals, branded under 'Thooshan.' This eco-conscious cutlery brand based in Ernakulam, Kerala, is now the world's sole producer of edible, biodegradable plates made from wheat bran.
What sets Thooshan's products apart is their versatility and sustainability. They can be consumed, used as organic manure, or even fish feed. Their production process is waste-free, and prices are affordable, making them an attractive alternative to plastic.
Balakrishnan envisions a future where Thooshan's products replace plastic plates, particularly at events and gatherings. He emphasizes the collective societal responsibility to phase out plastics and embrace innovative, sustainable alternatives. Balakrishnan's journey showcases how passion and determination can drive innovation, paving the way for a greener, more sustainable world.
