"Dream, Dream, Dream! Conduct these dreams into thoughts, and then transform them into action."

India’s changing military landscape has found one of its brightest symbols in Lieutenant Sheetal Mehlan, a young woman from Haryana whose remarkable journey transformed a father’s unrealised dream into a historic achievement. Hailing from Sonipat, she has become one of the district’s first women Army officers through the National Defence Academy (NDA) route and is among the pioneering women cadets commissioned into the Indian Army after completing the prestigious NDA-Indian Military Academy pathway.
Lieutenant Sheetal Mehlan belongs to Sonipat, while her ancestral roots lie in Samchana village of Rohtak district. Her father, Ashok Kumar Mehlan, runs a small business, while her mother, Mukesh Kumari, is a homemaker. Though there was no recent military tradition in the family, Ashok Kumar had always cherished a dream of serving in the armed forces. Financial constraints, however, prevented him from wearing the uniform he admired.
When Sheetal learnt about her father’s unfulfilled ambition while studying in Class 10, she made a promise to fulfil that dream herself. What started as an emotional commitment gradually became her life's mission.
Sheetal excelled academically from an early age. A student of Hindu Vidyapeeth, Sonipat, she scored more than 97 per cent in both Class 10 and Class 12 examinations. Teachers remember her as a disciplined and goal-oriented student who actively participated in cultural activities and displayed leadership qualities long before entering military training.
The opening of the NDA to women in 2021 presented the opportunity she had been waiting for.
Sheetal appeared for the NDA examination and cleared it in her very first attempt without attending any coaching institute. She secured an impressive All India Rank 9 among female candidates. She then faced the rigorous Services Selection Board (SSB) interview in Prayagraj and successfully cleared the psychological tests, group tasks and interviews designed to assess officer-like qualities.
According to a report in SSB Crack, another challenge awaited her. During medical examinations, she was found to be seven to eight kilograms above the prescribed weight limit. Given just 40 days to meet the standards, Sheetal embraced the challenge with unwavering determination.
Through strict fitness routines, running, swimming, gym sessions and disciplined eating habits, she lost nearly nine kilograms.
In 2022, Sheetal joined the National Defence Academy at Khadakwasla as part of its inaugural batch of women cadets. For three years, she underwent intensive military, physical and academic training alongside male cadets. The experience demanded endurance, leadership, teamwork and mental resilience.
More importantly, these women were creating a legacy for future generations. After completing her NDA training, Sheetal proceeded to the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun, where she became part of the first batch of women cadets to undergo regular pre-commission training through the NDA route.
In June 2026, Lieutenant Sheetal Mehlan was commissioned into the Indian Army along with eight other women officers from the first NDA batch. For Ashok Kumar Mehlan, it was the fulfilment of a dream he could never pursue. For Sheetal, it was the completion of a promise made years earlier.
Upon returning to Sonipat, she received a grand welcome. Children saluted her, neighbours celebrated with traditional rituals, and young girls approached her for guidance on joining the armed forces. Today, Lieutenant Sheetal Mehlan stands not just as an Army officer but as an inspiration for countless young Indians.
