Eighteen-year-old Dhaanvi Karthikeyan has scripted history by becoming the first female student from Tamil Nadu to visit the astronaut training and satellite manufacturing facilities in Moscow, Russia. Out of five lakh students who participated in a nationwide online competition, Dhaanvi was one of just five students selected from India to attend the prestigious five-day International Aerospace Camp. Her achievement is a remarkable milestone, not only highlighting her personal dedication to science but also signaling the growing participation of young Indian women in global STEM opportunities.
A resident of Virugambakkam, Chennai, Dhaanvi recently completed her Class 12 at a private school and appeared for the NEET entrance examination, aspiring to pursue a career in medicine. Alongside her studies, she pursued her passion for physics and quantum mechanics, completing an online Quantum Mechanics course from Stanford University through a private institute. Dhaanvi’s academic excellence, combined with her persistent curiosity about the cosmos, propelled her toward the unique opportunity in Moscow.
“This trip is a dream come true,” she said, reflecting on the years of dedication and study that led her to this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
During the International Aerospace Camp, Dhaanvi gained firsthand exposure to Russia’s advanced space technology. She visited the astronaut training facility, observing rigorous simulation exercises that prepare cosmonauts for space missions. Additionally, she explored the satellite manufacturing processes at the International Aerospace Centre, witnessing the technical intricacies of satellite design and construction.
“The opportunity to speak directly with experienced cosmonauts and learn about the technical aspects of space missions was incredible,” Dhaanvi shared. “It made me realize the depth of planning and precision required for every mission. I feel very lucky to have had such direct access to world-class expertise.”
Her interactions with cosmonauts were not just educational; they also offered inspiration. For a young woman from Chennai, these conversations provided insight into careers in aerospace engineering, astrophysics, and quantum mechanics, bridging classroom knowledge with real-world applications.
