India came agonisingly close to its first athletics gold at the Asian Games 2026, but the women’s long jump final delivered a dramatic finish in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. Ancy Sojan produced a superb 6.53m jump to take the lead in her fifth attempt. With gold seemingly within reach, the Indian athlete needed just one more strong round to hold on.

But China’s Huang Yingying had other plans. On her final attempt, Huang produced a 6.55m jump to leap past Ancy and claim the gold medal. The difference was just two centimetres.

Ancy’s final effort measured 6.49m, leaving her with a hard-earned silver.

A Battle Decided by Centimetres

Ancy had started the competition strongly with an opening jump of 6.49m, immediately placing herself among the medal contenders. The contest became increasingly intense as Huang matched the same distance in her fifth attempt.

Ancy then raised her mark to 6.53m, taking the lead at a crucial moment. It was a jump that put her in position to chase India’s first athletics gold of the Games.

However, Huang saved her best for last. Her 6.55m final jump changed the standings and handed China the top spot. Ancy could not respond with a bigger effort in her final attempt.

Shaili Singh Misses Bronze

There was another late twist for India. Shaili Singh was sitting in the bronze-medal position after five attempts, having recorded a best jump of 6.42m. But China’s Mengyi Tan produced a 6.46m effort in her final attempt.

That four-centimetre improvement was enough to move Tan into third place and push Shaili to fourth. For both Indian athletes, the final round brought a painful reminder of how tiny the margins can be in elite long jump.

India’s Athletics Medal Wait Continues

Ancy’s silver took India’s athletics medal tally at the Asian Games 2026 to 10 medals — five silver and five bronze. Yet the search for India’s first athletics gold of these Games continues. 

Overall, India’s medal count stood at 34—four gold, 15 silver and 15 bronze.

Ancy may have missed gold by the narrowest of margins, but her 6.53m effort delivered another medal for India and a thrilling long jump final that went down to the very last attempt.
