Cricket has a way of scripting stories that are as unpredictable as they are poetic. And Shafali Verma, India’s young cricketing dynamo, just penned another exhilarating chapter in her already illustrious career. The firebrand batter, renowned for her fearless strokes and aggressive gameplay, turned heads with the ball, spinning her way to a stunning hat-trick in the Women’s U23 One-Day Trophy. This landmark moment underscores her versatility and her indomitable spirit amidst a rollercoaster year of triumphs and setbacks.
Shafali’s journey through the past year has been nothing short of cinematic, a compelling mix of heartbreak and heroics. The 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup was a bitter pill to swallow, as India bowed out in the group stage, with Shafali managing just 97 runs from four matches. Doubts began creeping into conversations about her place in the national team, but she responded in the only way she knew, by setting the stage ablaze.
The 2025 Women’s Premier League (WPL) saw a resurgent Shafali unleash her batting fury. She amassed 304 runs at a blistering strike rate of 153, smashing 16 sixes, the second-highest in the tournament behind Ashleigh Gardner. However, despite her stellar individual performance, Delhi Capitals endured heartbreak yet again, losing their third consecutive final to Mumbai Indians. For Shafali, the sting of the WPL final loss lingered, but there was little time for mourning, she had another battle to fight.
Shafali Verma’s Triple Strike: A Batter’s Nightmare
Barely two days after the WPL final, Shafali was back on the field, this time leading Haryana in the U23 pre-quarterfinal against Karnataka in Guwahati. In a poetic twist, her WPL teammate Niki Prasad was now standing in the opposite camp, adding an intriguing layer to the contest.
With Karnataka cruising at 188-4, Shafali took matters into her own hands. Though known more for her explosive batting, her off-breaks had previously earned her 12 international wickets. The 44th over became her stage for a spellbinding act. She dismissed Saloni P and Soumya Verma off consecutive deliveries, sending shockwaves through the opposition camp. Then, as the 46th over commenced, she clean-bowled Namita D’Souza, sealing her hat-trick in dramatic fashion. Her final figures, 3 for 20 in four overs, etched her name into the record books as only the fourth Indian female cricketer to achieve a hat-trick in the 2024-25 season. More significantly, it was her first in the 50-over format, adding a new feather to her already decorated cap.
Despite Shafali’s heroics with the ball, Karnataka fought back valiantly. Mithila Vinod anchored the innings with a defiant 90 off 87 deliveries, steering her team to a competitive 217-run total. Shafali, taking on the role of opener, began her innings with characteristic aggression, cracking four boundaries in a fiery 12-ball 18. However, her early dismissal put Haryana under pressure at 71-3. Enter Sonia Mendhiya and Tanisha Ohlan, the duo stitched together a match-winning 92-run partnership, with Mendhiya’s 66 (79) and Ohlan’s unbeaten 77 (77) ensuring a comfortable chase. Triveni Vasistha’s composed 25 off 37 balls sealed the deal, as Haryana triumphed with six wickets and eight overs in hand.
Shafali Verma’s hat-trick is more than just a statistical milestone, it is a proof of her resilience, adaptability, and passion for the game. While the world knows her as a destructive batter, this performance serves as a reminder that she is no one-dimensional player. Her willingness to evolve, to take on new challenges, and to step up when the team needs her the most cements her status as one of India’s brightest cricketing prospects.
In cricket, as in life, the ability to bounce back defines true greatness. Shafali Verma has proven time and again that she is not just here to participate, she is here to leave a legacy. And with every six she smashes and every wicket she takes, she inches closer to that destiny. In this young age of 23, she is an inspiration to all those who dare to dream, work hard for it and look up to such success stories!
And all we can say is - Shabash Shafali!
