15 Jan 2025
Every year, January 15 is celebrated as ‘Army Day’ to honor a great moment in India’s history. On this day in 1949, General (late Field Marshal) KM Cariappa assumed command of the Indian Army from General Sir FRR Bucher, the last British Commander-in-Chief. He became the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of Independent India. This day not only marks the transition of leadership but also celebrates the valor, resilience, and commitment of the Indian Army.
From Colonial Roots to a Modern Force
The Indian Army’s origins trace back to the armies of the East India Company, which evolved into the British Indian Army and the Princely States’ forces. After independence in 1947, these units were integrated into the National Army of India. Over the years, the Indian Army has epitomized honor and bravery, earning recognition for its excellence both on the battlefield and beyond.
Marking a pivotal milestone, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh declared 2025 as the ‘Year of Reforms,’ ushering in a transformative era for the Indian Armed Forces. Building on the foundation laid during the ‘Year of Transformation’ (2023) and the ‘Years of Technology Absorption’ (2024 and 2025), this initiative aims to make the forces more agile, technologically advanced, and combat-ready. The Indian Army has already designated 2023-2032 as the ‘Decade of Transformation’ to underscore its long-term commitment to modernization.
Saluting the Bravehearts
On the occasion of the 77th Army Day, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh extended heartfelt greetings to soldiers, officers, and their families. “This day provides an opportunity to salute the indomitable courage, valor, and selfless service of our Army,” he said, emphasizing its contributions not just in defending borders but also in disaster management, peacekeeping, and humanitarian efforts. Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the Army’s “indomitable courage and sacrifice,” while President Droupadi Murmu commended its unparalleled role in national security.
The 77th Army Day parade, held for the first time in Pune, showcased the Indian Army’s modernization endeavors.
Among the highlights were robotic mules, officially termed Quadrupedal Unmanned Ground Vehicles (Q-UGVs). These cutting-edge machines, developed by AeroArc, are designed for tasks like perimeter security, hazardous material handling, and bomb disposal. Capable of autonomous operation, these ‘Multi-Utility Legged Equipment’ (MULEs) symbolize the Army’s commitment to leveraging technology to reduce risks for soldiers.
The Southern Command Investiture Ceremony, presided over by Lt. Gen. Dhiraj Seth at the BEG & Centre Parade Ground in Khadki, featured eight contingents from various regimental centers, advanced weaponry, and combat vehicles. The parade highlighted the Army's focus on preparedness and technological advancement.
This year’s celebrations also highlighted the Army’s inclusivity with the participation of the Women Agniveer Contingent. A “Know Your Army Mela” was organized, showcasing advancements in military technology and providing the public an opportunity to connect with the nation’s defenders. The event reaffirmed the Indian Army’s motto, “Service Before Self,” and its enduring commitment to the nation.
As the nation celebrated the 77th Army Day, tributes poured in for the soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for the country’s safety and sovereignty. The day served as a reminder of the Army’s pivotal role in ensuring India’s security and resilience.
Army Day is not just a day of commemoration; it’s a celebration of the indomitable spirit of the Indian Army—an institution that embodies the nation’s pride and trust.
