Sunil Chhetri, the iconic captain of the Indian football team, concluded his illustrious 19-year international career in a heartwarming and emotional farewell. His retirement, announced after India's goalless draw against Kuwait in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers at Kolkata's packed Salt Lake Stadium, marked the end of an era for Indian football.

The 39-year-old legend walked off the pitch to a standing ovation, his eyes brimming with tears as his teammates honored him with a guard of honour. The entire stadium rose in unison to celebrate a career that has significantly shaped Indian football. Chhetri’s gratitude was evident as he addressed the fans, saying, "To everyone who watched me in videos, took autographs, and supported me over the years, thank you. These 19 years would not have been possible without each and every one of you."

Chhetri bids farewell as India's top goal scorer, netting 94 international goals and boasting a record 151 appearances for the national team. He is the fourth highest goal scorer in the world trailing only behind icons such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Ali Daei, and Lionel Messi.

After the match, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) felicitated Chhetri for his unparalleled contributions to Indian football. With folded hands, he thanked the vast turnout, showcasing the humility and grace that have characterized his career. 

Chhetri's career is decorated with numerous accolades and achievements. His remarkable skills and leadership were on full display as he led India to victories at the Nehru Cup in 2007, 2009, and 2012.  He was instrumental in India's triumphs in the 2011, 2015, 2021, and 2023 SAFF Championships. One of his most memorable performances came in the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup, where his hat-trick in the final secured India a spot in the AFC Asian Cup for the first time in 27 years.

Chhetri’s journey has been a source of inspiration for countless young athletes aspiring to make their mark in football. The respect and admiration he commands were evident as legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar also paid tribute. Tendulkar, sharing a photograph of Chhetri from his final match, remarked, "No goal is easy to achieve. Let alone 94 international ones. You’ve held the flag high, Sunil Chhetri."
