Modhera village, situated in Mehsana district of Gujarat is associated with the Sun Temple. Now the village is set to shine brighter as it was declared India's first 24x7 solar-powered village on 9 October this year by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The project, which cost Rs. 80.66 crores to build, is a collaboration between the union and state governments.
There are reportedly 1300 1kW solar panels placed on the roofs of homes in Modhera hamlet. Its electricity output is used during the day. You may wonder how the village gets solar energy at night. Well, a 15 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project has been set up at Sujjanpura in Mehsana which stores energy by charging the batteries during the day and supplying power at night.
The excess energy produced here is sold to the government, which enables the people to purchase useful goods and services like stoves and gas connections.
Modhera is transforming the lives of thousands of its low-income people, including potters, tailors, and farmers by enabling them to manufacture more goods at no additional expense for electricity. Their children have been able to study inside the house thanks to the plentiful renewable energy that is available around the clock.
